About the „Visi išvien“ fund

A volunteer fund in Kaunas helping Ukraine hold on since the first days of the full-scale war.

Our mission

There are not many of us, but we are the hands that can and that give. Since the first days of the full-scale war we have collected in Lithuania what Ukrainians ask for and delivered it ourselves: beds, mattresses, medicine and bandages to hospitals as far as Sumy; trench candles and generators to people without electricity or heating; long-life food to community centres such as the volunteer centre in Pyriatyn; and, for Ukraine's defenders, camouflage nets that keep people hidden from the air and vehicles that evacuate the wounded and civilians and carry food and supplies.

When people bring pet food, we take it to animal shelters too: the grey zone is full of abandoned dogs and cats whose owners have left or been killed.

The charity and support fund Visi išvien was registered in Kaunas on 22 July 2024 to make this help more consistent, but its people have been at it since February 2022. Everything is prepared in the basement of the Basilica of the Resurrection in Kaunas, unpaid, and afterwards we show where every euro and every tin went.

“Laisvės ugnis” (Fire of Freedom): trench candles and camouflage nets, co-funded by the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence. Each year we run a different co-funded project.

Where the name comes from

Our name comes from the icon of St Josaphat in the Basilica of the Resurrection and its inscription “Da vsi jedino budut”, that all may be one (John 17:21). That is our credo: to link the people of Lithuania into one chain of help for Ukraine, from a tin brought to the basilica basement to a candle warming a trench.

What the fund lives by

Four main lines of work, from candles to vehicles for evacuation.

Humanitarian aid

In the basilica basement we collect medicine, bandages, long-life food, generators and warm clothing, based on real requests from hospitals, communities and Ukraine's defenders. Beds and mattresses from the LSMU Kaunas Hospital are already in service in Ukrainian hospitals.

Trench candles

The blanks — washed tins with a cardboard wick — are prepared in the basement daily; the tins are brought by people. The paraffin is poured at a separate location announced in advance: 1 kg of paraffin (about €1) makes 4 candles — the small one burns 3–4 hours in a trench, the bigger one 8–10.

Camouflage nets

One net takes 6–8 volunteers eight hours of weaving together: greenish-brown for the warm season, white or grey for winter. Under such a net, people and equipment stay unseen from the air.

Vehicles for evacuation and logistics

We find, fix up and personally deliver vehicles to Ukraine's defenders, often at their own request, for a specific unit or person. They evacuate the wounded and civilians and carry food and supplies; vehicles don't last long, so they are needed constantly.

Thank you to the parish of the Kaunas Basilica of the Resurrection of Christ

From the very first days of the war, the parish of Kaunas' Christ's Resurrection Basilica opened its basement to us — no rent, no conditions. Volunteers gather there every working day — preparing candle tins, weaving nets, sorting donated goods before their journey to Ukraine.

We are sincerely grateful to the parish for their trust and for the place where this work happens every day.

Volunteering in the Basilica basement

Daily volunteer work takes place in the basement of the Basilica. Anyone can join – individually or with a group, a company, a school.

Trench candle production

We prepare candle blanks in the basilica basement I–V 17:00–20:00 and VI 10:00–20:00. Paraffin pouring happens at a separate location and on other days — we announce them in advance. Companies, schools and organisations are welcome to join too.

Camouflage net weaving

One net takes eight hours and 6–8 volunteers to weave together. You can join during the same hours in the basilica basement — everyone is welcome: groups, families, companies and individual volunteers.

For educational sessions and organised volunteering, please contact: +370 612 69766 (Tatjana) or info@visiisvien.lt

Preparing humanitarian aid for the missions

We sort the donated goods and pack them into boxes, labelling each with what's inside — the boxes are weighed and listed for customs documents. Loading the vehicles is done by everyone who happens to be in the basement that evening.

For security reasons we don't announce departure days in advance.

Lietuvos Respublikos krašto apsaugos ministerija

Trench-candle production and camouflage-net weaving are co-funded by the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence under the project “Laisvės ugnis” (Fire of Freedom).

For school students we sign off their mandatory community service hours — for taking part in any of the three activities.
